Marginalised Youth: Power, Precarity & Possibilities

calendar10:00 Wednesday, 25 March 2026 to 16:00 Wednesday, 25 March 2026
One day youth studies conference taking place at the Department of Sociology, Durham University, Mill Hill Lane, Durham.

This one-day conference hosted by the Communities and Social Justice research group (Department of Sociology, Durham University) in conjunction with the Journal of Youth Studies aims to bring together researchers who are interested in critical youth studies to focus on questions of youth and marginalisation. Delegates are invited to consider diverse dimensions, forms and spaces of marginalisation. We will also explore the potential impact and power of youth studies to shape debates, agendas and policy. The day will include an opening keynote and closing panel. We expect an exciting line-up of parallel sessions given the response so far to the call for abstracts.

Opening Keynote: At the Coal Face: Youth and the Ghostly Matters of Barnsley Kat Simpson is a working-class academic and Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of Huddersfield. Her research explores how industrial legacies continue to shape the lives of young people in former coalfield communities, examining how the industrial past and the deindustrialised present intertwine to shape the lived experiences of the present-future.

Closing Panel: Power and Possibility – From Evidence to Action – Why Youth Research Matters

Koby Davis (youth worker, PhD student, DCMS Youth Strategy Youth Advisory Group), Anna Round (Head of Research and Impact, Youth Futures Foundation) and Sarah Tomlinson (youth researcher, University of Greater Manchester)

Registration is £50.00. Refreshments and lunch will be provided. We will be encouraging socialising in Durham in the evening!
